Electricity credits are paid for in advance on a 'pay-as-you-go' basis in exchange for secure, contactless RFID card tokens with values ranging from €1 to €50. Using radio frequency technology the cards can be programmed with unique serial codes to help protect customers' revenues and enable cancellation if lost or stolen.

Instead of needing to place a magnetic-stripe card in a meter's slot, RFID cards need only to be held close enough to the new generation of pre-payment meters to transfer credits.
